Japan sends bulletproof vests and military equipment to Ukraine

Bulsha:- Responding to Kiev's request, Japan immediately sent military supplies to Ukraine on Tuesday (8/3/2022).

The KC-767 aircraft left the base in Komaki, Aichi, for Poland on Tuesday (8/3/2022) evening local time. The air transport included helmets and bulletproof vests.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense stressed that it would continue to ensure similar efforts to help Kiev. Other assistance which includes various non-lethal goods will be sent immediately following the first batch.

The additional aid includes tents, winter clothing and emergency food. Supplies such as cleaning products, cameras and power generators were also deployed.

"We will deliver the goods by SDF aircraft and through other means as soon as possible," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno was quoted as saying by Japanese media, Kyodo News.

"To deliver helmets and bullet-proof vests to Ukraine, KC-767 departed from Komaki Air Base. JMOD/JSDF will continue to make every effort to help Ukraine," Japan's Ministry of Defense wrote in a tweet.

In addition to supplying equipment, Japan will also welcome the flow of refugees from Ukraine. Matsuno said Japan takes Ukraine's security issues seriously.

Japan also stressed that Russia's invasion of Ukraine violated international law. Thus, the aggression shook the heart of the international order.

Nevertheless, Matsuno added, the government will not supply lethal weapons. Japan draws clear boundaries on that.

Japan has three overarching principles that dictate when the transfer of defense equipment can be prohibited or permitted. This is because the country upholds the post-World War II pacifist constitution.

Delivery of aid to Ukraine is then considered rare. The decision reflects Japan's commitment to help Ukraine amid Russian aggression.

Thanks to the revision of the defense equipment transfer guidelines, the Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) was able to fly that helping hand. The Security Act was passed in 2015 when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office.

"The supplies are part of efforts to bring peace and security to the world and fulfill the objectives of the three principles," said Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi.
