Officials in India have announced the release of 11 Hindus sentenced to life in prison for gang rape of a pregnant Muslim woman

Bulsha:- Officials in India have announced the release of 11 Hindus sentenced to life in prison for gang rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during communal unrest that led to a mass massacre against Muslims in 2002, condemned by the victim's husband, lawyers and politicians.

The men were convicted in 2008, and released from a jail in Panchmahal in western Gujarat last Monday, as India celebrated 75 years of the end of British rule.

The Panchmahal Prisons Advisory Committee recommended release after considering how long the accused had spent - 11 of them - and their good behavior in jail.

Opposing politicians and lawyers said the release contradicted the government's declared policy to promote women in a country known for violence against them, and that reducing punishment for those convicted of a heinous crime like gang rape and murder is morally inappropriate.
