Sweden's support for joining NATO is getting stronger

Bulsha:- Polls show Sweden's support for joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is growing. Sweden and Finland are considering whether Russia's invasion of Ukraine prompted them to end decades of military neutrality.

The poll conducted by Demoscope and published by the Aftonbladet newspaper released on Wednesday (20/4/2022) showed that 57 percent of Swedish respondents supported NATO membership. This figure is up from last March which was 51 percent. While those who rejected it fell from 24 percent to 21 percent.

Respondents who have not yet made up their minds also dropped from 25 percent to 22 percent. Polls last March for the first time showed more Swedes in favor of their country joining NATO.

Sweden has not been to war since Napoleon's time and has built its security policy on "non-participation in military alliances". But such as Finland's invasion of Ukraine that Moscow calls a "special military operation" forced them to reconsider their military policies.

Both countries are now very likely to join NATO which contains 30 member states. The Swedish government is reviewing its security policy. They will submit a report at the end of March.

The ruling Social Democratic Party will hold an internal debate on whether to end its longstanding opposition to NATO. The Demoscope poll, which interviewed 1,177 people from April 14 to 19, also showed strong support for Social Democratic Party sympathizers for NATO membership.
