Bulsha:- Did you know that the largest lightning electric current in the world is in Indonesia, to be precise in the city of Depok, West Java? And recently, there was an interesting phenomenon related to lightning in Depok, a city that happened to be hit by heavy rain accompanied by a series of thunderous thunders blaring non-stop on Monday (14/3) yesterday.
Based on coil observations in Tanah Baru, Depok, lightning strikes about 15 times a minute. Similar findings also occurred in Sawangan. Regarding this incident, a lightning expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Syarif Hidayat, revealed that this phenomenon is actually quite common.
“It is caused by a phenomenon called orography. So in an area where there is a high mountain and nearby there is a bay, that's generally a lot of lightning. Why? Because every day the mountain is constantly exposed to sunlight, it becomes warm. Warm air rises, the void is filled by moist air from the direction of the bay."
This then produces what are called cumulonimbus clouds, which are clouds that form due to the vertical movement of air. Cumulonimbus clouds dominate the southern area of Jakarta, Depok, to Bogor. As a result, this area often experiences lightning with high frequency throughout the year. Syarif's statement is in line with research conducted in 2002 by a lightning expert as well as a researcher from the Laboratory of High Current and High Voltage, Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, ITB, Dr. Ir. Dip Ing Reynaldo Zoro, who said that Depok was the area with the largest lightning in the world.
In his research, Zoro received a negative lightning current of 379.2 kA (kilo Ampere) and a positive lightning current of 441.1 kA. He especially found the large lightning current in the area in the western part of Depok. With such a strong current, lightning can crack buildings made of concrete.
